Sound and Podcast Creation working with Youth Offending Services
In the field of sound and podcast creation, there is a significant opportunity for storytelling, self-expression, and community engagement. This was demonstrated in a recent 10-week project facilitated by sound artist Hannah Kemp-Welch and producer Naz Hoque, in partnership with young individuals collaborating with the Youth Offending Service in Barking and Dagenham.
Through a series of interactive workshops, Hannah and Naz provided a supportive environment where participants were encouraged to develop, write, record, and edit their own podcasts on topics that were meaningful to them. Equipped with professional recording equipment and computer software, the young artists embarked on a journey of discovery, drawing from their personal experiences and relationships to craft insightful and impactful narratives.
What distinguished this project was its focus on working together and inclusivity. In a welcoming, secure, and supportive environment curated by Hannah and Naz, participants found the space to express themselves genuinely, using their creativity to amplify their voices and share their stories with others. From exploring themes of identity and belonging to reflecting on their interactions with peers and family, each podcast showcased the resilience, bravery, and creativity of its creators.
As the project concluded with a listening session at The White House in Dagenham followed by a celebratory meal at Nando’s, it was clear that the impact extended beyond the recording studio. Participants emerged not just as podcast producers but as empowered individuals with new skills, perspectives, and a sense of belonging within their community.
As we reflect on the achievements of the Sound and Podcast Creation project, we are reminded of the significant influence that storytelling and creative expression can have in promoting empathy, understanding, and societal change. With innovators like Hannah Kemp-Welch and Naz Hoque leading the way, the future of sound and podcast creation looks brighter than ever.
